Rock and Roll and Homosexuality – a Rant by Yazmin

“I do great music, then why question the very core of it? Me???????” – Anonymous

Both genres are pretty masculine in nature. So could a gay person “actually” produce or even think of conceiving masterpieces such as the great Rolling Stones, Iron Maiden or even Death, instead of producing silly sounding electronica tracks or bubble gum pop which the majority of them have been producing since the disco era? Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy electonica, but some tracks are rather horrible to even listen to let alone dance to!

The world has always carved out gay men to belong in a women’s only store, but that sort of mentality has proved the whole world WRONG as it has truly overlooked on gay talent…overshadowed yes, but that didn’t stop the great few that went on to become the genre’s gods and demi-gods!….And may there be more! “Amen.”

Rob Halford – Judas Priest

Halford joined the band in 1974 and his sexual orientation was kept as a secret from the general public (apart from his band members and loyal fans) who perceived him to be the “perfect straight man” and that so called “holy” image was shattered when he publicly confessed in an interview on MTV back in 1998.

So how did the world react?

Halford called the response from the heavy metal community as “tremendous“; “As far as backlash… there’s been absolutely no fallout from it. It hasn’t affected my record sales, or my show attendance.… For some people, it was the worst-kept secret, other people couldn’t care less. I think that people had to address their own phobic issues and realize that sexuality has nothing to do with the music.”

And when asked in another interview ten years ago if other metal musicians thanked him for inspiring them to come to terms with their sexuality, he had this to say – “It would be ridiculous to think that there isn’t at least one other gay metalhead out there. But then again, it’s a personal choice – whether you want to step forward or not. I’d like to think that what I did, and that it didn’t affect my career, is an encouragement. But then again, you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink. It’s very much a private/personal choice.”

Gaahl – Gorgorth

This Norwegian Black Metal Vocalist, best known as the former front-man of ‘Gorgoroth’ and ‘God Seed’ confirmed his sexual orientation in 2008, after a much talked about affair he had with Dan De Vero, a modeling agent , since 2006.

The relationship and him being a homosexual wasn’t too well received by people within the Black Metal community as Dan Vero even became the subject of threats even well after their relationship ended; Gaahl denied that anyone had ever said anything derogatory to his face, after an incident at the Wacken Open Air in 2008.

When asked if he thinks people will see him and his music differently since he has publicly acknowledged his homosexuality, Gaahl replied:

“Mankind is known to be narrow-minded, so… maybe some will have a negative reaction. But I guess it will even out the score in a way. I think it will be positive for some and negative for some. It’s always good to have some negative as well. Otherwise you would end up with equality and equality is the worst thing in the world. Equality is stagnation. It doesn’t let anything grow. It holds back.”

Freddy Mercury – Queen

“I am as gay as a daffodil, my dear”

1974, was the year when the late front man of Queen referred to himself as gay, but other sources did beg to differ stating that he has been “openly gay,” while others claim that the man referred himself as a bisexual on occasions.

It was around the same time that Mercury begun an affair with a record executive which resulted in the end of his marriage with Mary Austin and when did that affair end? Only Joe knows and by 1979, Mercury began to frequently visit gay bathhouses and clubs where he met many plenty of short-term partners.

Jim Hutton was another love interest of his and by 1985, Mercury and Hutton embarked on another long-term relationship, this one that lasted until the time of his death.

Billy Joe Armstrong – GreenDay

While this guy may not belong to a “pure rock band”, his mention is quite noteworthy on this article.

It was sometime in 1995 that he openly fessed that he was bisexual in an interview with The Advocate.

“I think I’ve always been bisexual. I mean, it’s something that I’ve always been interested in. I think people are born bisexual, and it’s just that our parents and society kind of veer us off into this feeling of  ‘oh, I can’t.’  They say it’s taboo. It’s ingrained in our heads that it’s bad, when it’s not bad at all. It’s a very beautiful thing.”

Just a quick thank you to all those “metalheads” who are anti gay and bisexual,  for making me get off my ass and write this and  prove to you that its not all the straight men that capable of taking up a guitar and rockin the joint.

You guys suck for only supporting lesbians!
