10
Detroit Rock City
Four die-hard KISS fans wait breathlessly for their favorite band to visit Detroit, so that they can see them live. After going through the proverbial hell and dale to make the gig, including emptying their pockets to buy tickets, they have to “kiss” their dream goodbye when one friend’s mom, who is an anti KISS activist, takes every action imaginable to stop them from going. However, being the diehard KISS fans they are, they decide to stand up for themselves and see KISS live anyway; even if it means that they’ll have to kill someone.
Based in a setting during the ‘70s when KISS was at their peak, this movie just makes you grit your teeth, laugh and cry at the same stretch.
9
School of Rock
Everyone knows this one. There is no need for an explanation as to why this makes it on the top ten list. And honestly, if you call yourself a Rock and Roller, and you have not watched this one you’d better go hang yourself on a rollercoaster.
It’s funny, it’s Rock ‘n’ Roll and it’s Jack Black! It’s needless to say much more.
8
Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny
Based on a fictitious plot surrounding Jack Black and Kyle Gass’s band “Tenacious D” – which also went on to be featured in a TV series – this movie fires off a torpedo of rock and comedy right from the beginning. The sly comical innuendo of the extent a band would go to make the big break of their career is what makes this movie one of the best Rock ‘n’ Roll movies ever.
With a special guest appearance by Ronnie James Dio, kick-ass music and a heck load of comedy; it can’t not be on this top ten list! It’s a great watch.
7
The Boat That Rocked
With their faithful fans on shore “Radio Rock,” broadcasts from a ship 180 miles out at sea. With the British government trying their best to shut their station down, tracing them to every pin drop they make, in the hope of finding some tiny point to take legal action against them; the die hard crew of Radio Rock maintains the station as the most listened-to radio channel on the island. They go through all this hassle, simply because they play real music. What less do you deserve than fame and stardom when you stick to what you truly are and what you truly believe in?
This in our opinion is one of the best movies released in 2008, and it is one awesome movie based on the Rock ‘n’ Roll lifestyle.
6
That Thing You Do
Working with a band is hard. Getting a band to produce a hit record is harder. But imagine a band achieving all that the Beatles bled years to achieve, in just three months and loosing it in the split of a note. Tom Hanks proves that he can write as well as act comedy with That Thing You Do.
The movie revolves around the story of the ‘60s rock band “The Wonders” who reach stardom faster than they can say “Rock star.” With all the sex, the fame and the money they get through their instant success, the band faces a lot of difficulty trying to balance their new and quick found glory with their personal lives.
5
Backbeat
Did you know that this century’s best known song ‘Yesterday’ (according to a BBC Radio poll) started off with the working lyrics ‘Scrambled Eggs?’ Did you know that the band that wrote this song won a band popularity contest held by Mersyside Newspaper in their home town of Liverpool in 1962, mainly by calling in posing as different people and voting for themselves? Did you also know that this band didn’t start off as 4 Beatles either; it was initially 5 – until one decided to choose against being a Rock Star.
You can throw “the lost Beatle” aside for a while as Backbeat chronicles the early days of the ‘60s biggest band with an insight as to why Stuart Sutcliffe left the Beatles right as they were ready to take off in to superstardom. And while Paul McCartney has said that he didn’t like the movie because it took away the Rock ‘n’ Roll factor away from him, we still think it’s a non-stop enthuse and a must watch.
4
Rock Star
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be the lead singer of your favorite hard-rock band? The fast cars, the even faster girls and the fast life just seems so surreal to many. But what if lady luck smiles widely on you and you find yourself auditioning as the front-man for the very band you idolized all your life? It’s the money, the fame, the tour busses full of groupies and the raunchy sex life of a rock star that you’ve always dreamt of; but can you really take it too fast and too soon?
Based loosely around the story of Tim ‘Ripper’ Owens and Judas Priest, this is the story about an insanely talented young rocker turning in to a super star over night. And with a ball busting sound track and delightful Rock ‘n’ Roll correctness, “Rock Star” just rips your heart out and throws it in a burning blender.
3
Almost Famous
He is 15 and he scores a gig to write for the biggest Rock ‘n’ Roll magazine in the world. Touring with an up-coming band, living on the road, William Miller experiences a life that most people twice his age only can dream of experiencing. Falling in love and falling into the rut of being wasted is no different when you’re on the road, living the fast life of a musician. Naive and young, William has to face the heart breaks and the drawbacks in life before reaching adolescence. With 76 nominations and one Oscar, “Almost Famous” is one Brilliant production. No doubt about it making it to the top three of the all time best movies of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
2
The Doors
This is the quintessence of sex drugs and Rock ‘n’ Roll. The story of Jim Morrison, his legendary lyrics and philosophies of life which draws you into a whole other dimension of thought, has been brought to film with lucid artistry in ‘The Doors.’ For all of you who were not lucky enough to be at a Doors concert, you’d wish you were born in your parent’s time after watching this one.
If not for the few dramatizations of the real biography of the band, the movie would have been one of the best movie biographies ever produced. Still this one just rockets its way up on our list as one of the top movies of Rock ‘n’ Roll in history.
1
This is Spinal Tap
If this movie was a Rock anthem, this movie is “Kashmir.” With all those plots to make stories of, with all the bands to write about and make best selling movies on, here comes a movie – based on a fictitious band clawing their way to stardom – that kicks the rest out of the way. Forget about the long hair and the transsexual clothing. This movie breaks through because of its honesty and its ability to relate to anyone who has ever been in a band.
From the ends of the recklessness of a rocker to the depths of his endless endeavor trying to achieve his dream, the movie takes you through it all. It’s a must watch for any rock fan and if you’ve ever been in a band, you will shed at least one tear during this movie. If we were to sum this up in one word, the movie is simply “Brilliant.”
Not on the List
24 Hour Party People – If not for the clutter of the movie setting, the movie would have been a perfect fit in the top ten. This would be the 11th best in terms of the criterion.
The Rocker – It’s not the best movie experience, nor is it the best production on Rock ‘n’ Roll. But its worth watching.
Rock ‘n’ Roll High School – Based on “The Ramones” and the craziness of their die-hard fans, this movie is a great watch.
Purple Rain (The Movie) – This is not the best movie. But its basis around a legend of Rock is worth the watch.
Stoned – Based on the legendary Rolling Stones, this is a peek into the lifestyle of a Rock Star during the 60s.
